Scholarship Information 2008-09
Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants will award $1,000. scholarships to current junior and senior students. To apply for this scholarship you will need to write an essay on one of two topics. The deadline for submitting essays is June 20, 2009. Topics and other information can be found at www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm.
The Art Institute is offering teens the opportunity to become "Best Teen Chef". Entry and release forms are due February 6, 2009. For more information check out www.ArtInstitutes.edu/BTC.
The AXA Achievement Scholarship deadline is December 15, 2008. Go to www.axa-achievement.com to learn more about all of their scholarship programs and download an application form. There will be fifty-two $10,000. state winners.
Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation offers $3 million in achievement-based awards to high school seniors. Applicants are selected based on academic achievement, leaderships and community service. The application deadline is October 31 st. Check out their website at www.coca-colascholars.org.
The Gongaware Scholarship is for students who earn a minimum GPA of 3.5 and achieve a ranking in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class. Students must also be pursuing a career in financial services at Indiana State University. For more information go to www.indstate.edu/business/gongaware.
Hoosier Boys State is a week long learning experience in the theory, organization, and practical application of the process of our democratic form of government. The Hoosier Boys State is held on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana and will take place from June 13-20, 2009. Nearly $12,000 in college scholarships will be awarded to Hoosier Boys State citizens at the 2009 Hoosier Boys State session. Brochures are available in the office.
Horatio Alger Association Scholarships are awarded to students who are senior U.S. citizens in need of financial assistance and committed to a four year degree. Applications will be accepted until October 30, 2008. Apply online at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships.
The Hugh and Eve Meeter Calvinism Awards are for high school seniors. Awards are given annually for research papers on a topic dealing with John Calvin or Calvinism. Awards are payable to student tuition accounts at the following colleges: Calvin, Dordt, King?s, Redeemer, Kuyper and Trinity. First place is $2,500. and second place is $1,250.
The Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission is sponsoring an essay competition for high school students in grades 9-12. Schools may submit up to three essays prior to November 1, 2008. The title of the essay is ?Abraham Lincoln?s Legacy to Indiana?. It must be 400 words minimum and 600 words maximum. First place will be $5,000., second place is $3,000. and third place is $1,000. The Indiana Creation Science Association is sponsoring a contest for 11 th and 12 th grade students. Students will write a 3,500 word essay entitled Cultural and Historical Evidences for a Worldwide Flood. First place will be awarded $200. and second place will win $50. This year marks the 20 th year of the Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance eXceL Awards. The deadline for entries this year is the week of December 12, 2008. Kids' Chance of Indiana, Inc. offers annual educational scholarships (up to $6,000/yr) to children 16 years and older of Indiana workers who has passed away or been permanently disabled as a result of a work-related accident or occupational disease. Learn more at www.Kidschancein.org.
SAE's 2009 Engineering Scholarships are awarded to qualified students who are interested in the study of engineering and related sciences. More than 60 corporate and university sponsored scholarships are available. Applications are accepted until December 1, 2008. Applicants must be high school seniors. This is the first year for the Tricia Marie Simpson Russell Memorial Scholarship. Students must be able to provide evidence of application to or current enrollment in a nursing program. U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship Program runs October through February. No essays or minimum GPAs are required. Thirty $1,000. scholarships are awarded in a random drawing. Apply online at www.usbank.com/studentbanking.
Universities and colleges frequently offer multiple scholarship opportunities for students. Check out the websites of the colleges that you are considering and check out what is available and when your application form is due. They really are too numerous to list. (i.e. Indiana University's Gongaware Scholarship is only one of many that they offer).
Application forms for some of the scholarships listed are also available in the guidance office.
Many public institutions are becoming quite competitive as there are more applicants than openings. Check now with the institution that you would like to apply to so that you don't miss any deadlines. (i.e. November 15, 2008 is the application deadline for many academic programs as well as for admission applications to be considered for Purdue merit scholarships).

Juniors: If you rank in the top fifth of your class, you are eligible to compete for the Schubmehl-Prein Scholarship. Essays are due by May 31, 2009. The McKelvey Foundation is offering entrepreneurial scholarships to seniors who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school. On-line applications are available at www.mckelveyfoundation.org and are due January 25, 2009.

Students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The essay topic is "Five perils that challenged Christopher Columbus". The General Van Rensselaer Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring the DAR Good Citizen Contest. This contest is open to senior students. The student will write an essay titled "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It". Essays are due on November 21, 2008. For more information contact the guidance office.

The National Commission for Cooperative Education offers a number of scholarships for students attending one of ten partnering schools. For a list of schools and scholarship information go to www.co-op.edu. Applications are due by February 15, 2009. A minimum 3.5 GPA is required.
The PHP Scholarship Program if offered to seniors planning to pursue a career in a health-related field. A minimum 3.0 GPA and an essay are required. Applications are due by February 27, 2009. For more information contact custsvc@phpni.com or visit the guidance office.
Local Scholarship Information
Several local scholarships are available to Covenant students. Students applying for these scholarships must download the Kankakee Valley High School forms which have been modified (with permission) for Covenant students. The form is provided on the "Local Scholarship Application" link under "Guidance". Those scholarships include the following:
Belstra Milling Scholarship - Eligibility: Any senior planning to attend an accredited college. Preference is given to children of Belstra Milling employees. (Deadline March 12 at noon)
DeMotte Police Reserves - Eligibility: Senior pursuing study of Criminal Law or Law Enforcement. Must include an essay answering the question "Why a Career in Law Enforcement is Important to Me." May include an interview. (Deadline March 1)
DeMotte Rotary - Eligibility: Senior in top 20% of class. Will include an interview. (Deadline March 1)
Hamstra (Wilbert) Scholarship - Eligibility: Senior planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution and entering a career in technology or building trades. (Deadline March 12 at noon)
Kankakee Valley Community Scholarship - Eligibility: Senior accepted to a 2 or 4 year college or university. Please include a one page, double spaced essay describing how you have made an impact on your community. Feel free to use examples from church involvement, extra curricular activities, civic organizations, etc. (Deadline March 18)
Jasper Foundation Scholarship Information
The Jasper Foundation link is found on the "Guidance" page. Scholarship application forms for a number of scholarships can be downloaded directly from the Jasper Foundation site ( www.jasperfdn.org). Those scholarships include:
Dr. Cecil E. and Mrs. Gladys Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund: Scholarships awarded to graduates of Jasper and Newton Counties who plan to pursue careers in the medical and medica-related fields. Applications are also available in the guidance office and are due by March 12 at noon.
The Grace Pampel Education Scholarships are for graduates who are planning careers in the Agricultural (such as Agribusiness, Animal Science, Landscape Architecture, etc.), Fine Arts & Music (such as drawing, film, textiles, poetry, etc.) or Nursing Fields. Applications are also available in the guidance office and are due by March 12 at noon.
The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship will provide full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $800./year for required books and equipment for four years of undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureat degree at any Indiana public or proviate college or university accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Applications are due by noon on Thursday, January 8, 2009. Applications are also available in the guidance office.

The Cindy McKinney Scholarship is available to all students who plan to complete undergraduate or graduate study in special education. Applications will be judged on the candidate's past achievements, future goals, qualities that lend themselves to the field of special education and financial need. Applications are due by March 13, 2009 and are available in the guidance office.
The Nesius Memorial Scholarship is available to students who are sons, daughters or legal wards of Jasper County REMC members. Application forms are available at www.jasperremc.com. Click on 'downloadable forms' and then Nesius Scholarship. Applications are due before 5:00 p.m. on April 8, 2009.
